Docking stations to compare

The table below prioritises explicit manufacturer pair evidence where we have it. “Standards match” means the published host and dock capabilities overlap; it is not a manufacturer certification of that exact pair.

How to choose a dock for this model

  1. Match the host standard. Start with the actual Thunderbolt, USB4 or USB-C DisplayPort capability above rather than the connector shape.
  2. Check your display requirement. Monitor count, resolution and refresh rate must fit both the laptop and dock.
  3. Check charging separately. A dock may provide working displays and USB while supplying less power than the laptop normally expects.
  4. Prefer explicit manufacturer pair evidence. Where the manufacturer publishes a compatibility matrix, that evidence outranks our standards-based inference.

What is specific to the original Surface Laptop Studio?

Microsoft lists the original Surface Laptop Studio with two USB-C ports using USB4/Thunderbolt 4. For direct external displays, Microsoft publishes a single-display ceiling of 5120×2880 at 120Hz (or 4096×2304 at 60Hz), while dual displays are listed up to 4096×2304 at 60Hz each.

That is a useful distinction from Surface Laptop Studio 2: the second generation raises the published single-display ceiling to 5120×3200 at 120Hz, even though both generations retain the same published dual-display ceiling. This page therefore remains separate because the boundary conditions are not identical.
