Will a docking station charge my laptop?
Many modern docks deliver USB Power Delivery back to the laptop, but “supports charging” and “replaces the laptop's normal charger at full performance” are not always the same thing.
Charging compatibility has three separate questions
First, does the laptop accept charging through the selected USB-C, USB4 or Thunderbolt port? Second, how much power can the dock deliver to the host? Third, is that amount enough for the laptop under the workload you expect?
A setup can therefore be fully compatible for monitors, Ethernet and USB while still being a poor replacement for the original high-wattage charger.
Compare watts
If a laptop normally targets 100W and a dock provides 65W, the data and displays may still work while charging is slower. Under sustained heavy load the battery can sometimes discharge even while connected.
Manufacturer-specific power can differ
Some docks provide a higher proprietary or vendor-specific power level to same-brand laptops while supplying a lower USB Power Delivery level to other brands. The checker stores these differences when the manufacturer publishes them.
Same-brand docks can provide different power
Some business docks negotiate higher vendor-specific charging levels with supported laptops from the same manufacturer. A dock advertised with a high maximum therefore may provide a lower standard USB Power Delivery figure to another brand.
That is why our compatibility database can store a brand-specific charging figure instead of assuming the largest number on the product page applies to every laptop.
Shared power budgets
Some docks reduce host charging when other high-power downstream ports are used. This is a caveat worth checking for setups that charge several devices at once.
