Display Stream Compression (DSC) and docking stations explained
DSC is one reason a dock can publish dramatically different monitor limits depending on the laptop. The dock may be capable of more than the host can deliver without compression support.
Why DSC matters
Display links have finite bandwidth. DSC can reduce the amount of link bandwidth required for high-resolution or high-refresh video while being designed for visually lossless display use.
Manufacturers therefore often publish one set of limits for hosts with DSC and a lower set for hosts without it.
The dock cannot add host DSC support
A dock that supports DSC does not make an older or differently configured laptop support it. The laptop GPU/display path and host connection must provide the required capability.
This is particularly important when comparing impressive headline modes such as several 4K60 displays.
Why simple calculators get this wrong
A page that only compares connector names can miss the actual display pipeline. Two laptops with USB-C or even Thunderbolt can expose different effective monitor limits depending on GPU and DSC support.
Where a manufacturer's table distinguishes these cases, that table should drive the answer.
How we treat it
Our dock caveats identify DSC-dependent ceilings where the manufacturer publishes them. If the selected laptop record does not establish the required capability, the checker should return a caveat rather than an unsupported guarantee.
