MST docking stations: why Windows and macOS can behave differently

MST lets a DisplayPort link carry multiple display streams, but operating systems and laptop implementations do not all use it in the same way.

What MST is doing

A dock can use Multi-Stream Transport to divide a DisplayPort connection between several external displays. This is common in USB-C docking designs that expose multiple HDMI or DisplayPort outputs.

The total link still has a finite bandwidth budget, so resolution and refresh limits often decrease as more displays are attached.

Why macOS needs special attention

A multi-output dock that creates several extended desktops on Windows may not provide the same native extended-display behaviour on macOS. Some products explicitly document mirroring behaviour or a lower number of independent displays on Mac.

This is why a dock's 'three monitor' marketing claim must be read together with its operating-system table.

MST is not DisplayLink

MST divides a native DisplayPort stream. DisplayLink creates additional displays through USB data and software. The two approaches solve different problems and have different compatibility considerations.

A dock can use one, the other or a mixture of technologies depending on design.

What to check

Find the manufacturer's display table for the exact OS and host mode. If the product page only gives a maximum number without explaining Windows/macOS differences, seek the detailed manual before buying.
