Can a docking station run a 120Hz, 144Hz or 165Hz monitor?
A dock labelled 4K does not automatically support 4K at 120Hz or 144Hz. Resolution and refresh rate consume display bandwidth together.
Resolution and refresh are a pair
A statement such as 'supports 4K' is incomplete unless a refresh rate is attached. 4K60 and 4K144 represent very different display requirements.
The same dock may comfortably run 1440p144 while not supporting 4K144, depending on the host link and display-output implementation.
The laptop can be the bottleneck
Even if a dock has a high-refresh display output, the laptop must deliver a compatible signal through the host connection. GPU limits, DisplayPort generation, DSC support and the number of active displays all matter.
This is why our checker asks for refresh rate rather than using resolution alone.
Multi-monitor setups change the answer
Adding a second or third display can reduce the bandwidth available to each output. Manufacturer tables often publish different resolution ceilings for one, two, three and four monitors.
A single-display headline on a product page should therefore not be assumed to apply to every output simultaneously.
What to verify before buying
Find a manufacturer display table that matches your host mode and monitor count. Confirm whether the high-refresh mode is native or depends on DSC, a particular cable standard or a specific port.
If the manufacturer only publishes a lower confirmed refresh rate, treat a higher rate as unverified rather than guaranteed.
