Why does my docking station only detect one monitor?

When a dock has several video sockets but only one external monitor works, the unused socket is not necessarily faulty. The host and display technology often explain the limitation.

Check the laptop's native display limit

Some laptops can drive fewer external displays than the dock can expose. The dock cannot create extra native GPU display engines simply because it has more connectors.

Apple chip generation is a common example of why exact model data matters: external-display limits vary between models and operating modes.

Check whether the dock needs MST or DisplayLink

Some multi-monitor USB-C docks rely on DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST); some use DisplayLink software. macOS does not treat every MST arrangement like Windows, while DisplayLink requires software support.

If the required display technology is missing, the second physical port may not produce a second extended desktop.

Check the active host mode

A Thunderbolt dock connected through a plain USB-C fallback path can expose fewer displays than it does over full Thunderbolt. The connector still fits, but the operating mode has changed.

Then check the basics

Confirm cables, monitor inputs, dock firmware, graphics drivers and operating-system updates. Test one monitor at a time, then reconnect the intended topology.

If the manufacturer publishes a known-good topology for the exact laptop and dock, use that as the baseline.
