Can you use a Dell dock with HP, Lenovo, ASUS or another laptop?

Standards create the opportunity
USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4 and Thunderbolt allow equipment from different manufacturers to share common host interfaces. This is why a Dell, Lenovo, HP, Plugable or CalDigit dock can often communicate with another brand's laptop.
The shared standard establishes a potential path, not a guarantee of every feature.
What can change across brands
Charging power, power-button integration, MAC-address passthrough, firmware management, enterprise deployment features and maximum display topology can be vendor-specific.
A same-brand dock may therefore expose extra business features even when a cross-brand dock handles ordinary USB, networking and displays.
Manufacturer matrix beats inference
